Un grupo de investigadores ha utilizado inteligencia artificial para identificar 70 500 nuevos virus de ARN, lo que ha revelado\u00a0una amplia diversidad viral, seg\u00fan informa 20 minutos. Publicado en la revista Cell, este hallazgo demuestra el potencial de la IA para descubrir virus que antes hab\u00edan pasado desapercibidos.
\nContinuando con 20 minutos, liderados por Artem Babaian de la Universidad de Toronto, los cient\u00edficos emplearon metagen\u00f3mica, una t\u00e9cnica que permite analizar el ADN de m\u00faltiples organismos sin aislarlos, para identificar estas nuevas especies virales. El sistema de IA, llamado LucaProt, se entren\u00f3 para detectar prote\u00ednas clave en la replicaci\u00f3n del ARN, lo que permiti\u00f3 descubrir nuevas secuencias gen\u00e9ticas.
\nHallazgos en entornos extremos
\nSiguiendo con la misma fuente, este m\u00e9todo permiti\u00f3 encontrar virus en entornos extremos como aguas termales y lagos salados, as\u00ed como secuencias virales nunca antes vistas.
\nCasi la mitad de los virus identificados no hab\u00edan sido descritos previamente, lo que ampl\u00eda el conocimiento sobre la evoluci\u00f3n de los virus en distintos ecosistemas y organismos, seg\u00fan la vir\u00f3loga Jackie Mahar del CSIRO de Australia, citada por 20 minutos.
\nClasificaci\u00f3n de los virus
\nLos virus, a decir de El Espectador, son microorganismos que pueden causar diversas enfermedades en los seres humanos, como el VIH, el covid-19, el sarampi\u00f3n y la viruela. Estos se clasifican en dos tipos principales: ADN y ARN, dependiendo del material gen\u00e9tico que utilizan para replicarse.
\nLos virus de ADN incluyen el herpes y la hepatitis B, mientras que los de ARN, como el VIH y el \u00e9bola, tienden a mutar m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido debido a su incapacidad para corregir errores durante la replicaci\u00f3n.
\nAvances en identificaci\u00f3n de virus
\nEl programa de inteligencia artificial llamado LucaProt, siguiendo con la fuente, ha podido identificar virus de ARN desconocidos. Este algoritmo, basado en la identificaci\u00f3n de la prote\u00edna RdRP, analiz\u00f3 m\u00e1s de 51 terabytes de datos y descubri\u00f3 513 134 fragmentos virales, lo que corresponde a 161 979 posibles especies virales. De estas, 70 458 especies nunca antes hab\u00edan sido descritas, lo que destaca\u00a0la gran diversidad de virus de ARN a\u00fan por descubrir.
\nDesaf\u00edos en la comprensi\u00f3n viral
\nA pesar de los avances en la identificaci\u00f3n de nuevos virus, existen grandes vac\u00edos en el conocimiento sobre su evoluci\u00f3n y sus hu\u00e9spedes. La mayor\u00eda de los virus reci\u00e9n descubiertos no tienen un hu\u00e9sped conocido, lo que genera incertidumbre sobre si podr\u00edan afectar o no a los humanos.<\/p>\n
